Romanian Terminology - a Node in the European Terminological Network

The present paper is aimed at showing recent developments in Romanian terminology and possibilities of consolidating its status in view of future cooperation.

State-of-the-art

Romania has had a long tradition in terminological activity reflected mainly by terminographical products - dictionaries and terminologies present in standards of various subject fields.

Previously there has been no specific training in terminology as a discipline, and, consequently, there was no status recognition of professional terminologists.

The early nineties, the moment called 'east meets west', was characterized by an ever increasing need to communicate internationally among specialists of various fields.

The wind of change brought about novelties in the development of terminology; from among them we mention:

- terminology introduced as a subject in the curriculum;

- teachers trained in terminology within European higher education programs, organized especially in the French-speaking countries;

- in-service training in terminological matters;

- diploma papers in terminology defended by a number of students for various specialisms;

- participation in international reunions, conferences, symposia,seminars etc. dealing with terminological issues;

- participation in international projects of terminology design;

- permanent support from the Latin Union;

- permanent access to up-to-date information provided by electronic lists over the Internet.

Challenge of Change for the Coming Millenium

From among the issues in focus for short and long term development of terminology in Romania we consider of major priority:

- the creation of an inventory of human resources involved in terminology;

- assessment of termninological knowledge and expertise;

- the creation of an inventory of terminographical products;

- the joint effort of bringing together the existing human and material resources to develop an activity based on an action plan, with objectives resulting from a needs analysis;

- mutual dissemination of information about work in progress in the country;

- development of terminological data banks; networking at verious levels: intra- and inter institutional, regional, national, international.
