Conférence
pour une Conferencia para una infraestructura terminolgica en Europa Conference
for a terminology
Paris,
13-14-15/03/2000
In our presentation we will give a brief overview of the possibilities and problems in establishing a Danish centre for terminology, the DANTERM Centre. Despite the existence of a terminological infrastructure - in terms of interest and motivation in Danish institutions and companies - it took many years to reach the goal. The problems encountered and the solution which was finally found may serve as inspiration for others who want to establish a centre. The DANTERM Centre was finally created on the basis of what in Denmark is known as a centre contract - a governmentally funded collaboration between research institutions, private companies and a so-called technological service institute - in this case the DANTERM Centre. This contract ensures the centre financially for three years, and the main goal of the contract is to have gathered the experience and know-how it takes to continue running the centre. Several of the companies participating in the centre contract have worked in the field of terminology for many years already, collecting and structuring data as well as creating term databases. Their translation departments include people with a background in terminology and language for special purposes. By participating in the centre contract project not only they, but also the DANTERM centre, receive valuable experience by exchanging ideas and opinions.
