IEC/TC1 and IEC/TC25 are horizontal and complementary committees. Their scopes, their methodologies and the results of their work are presented. Their standards are not prepared by a few experts but on a truly worldwide basis. Liaison is maintained with other international organizations. The IEC was instrumental in the development of the basis of the SI system, used all over the world. IEC/TC1 and 25 depend on the support of the IEC community.

For the users of IEC standards, the consistent application of a unified terminology (as well as unified quantities and units) is an important criterion by which the overall quality of the standards may be judged.
